Houghton Lake freezes hard every winter, and docks left in on the soft muck bottom are almost certain to be damaged by ice movement. We pull docks from Michigan's largest inland lake every fall — efficiently and professionally.
Houghton Lake is Michigan's largest inland lake — 20,000 acres of shallow, muck-bottomed water that freezes completely every winter. When that ice moves in fall storms and thaws in spring, any dock section left in the water is subject to movement, damage, or outright destruction. This is especially true on Houghton Lake's muck bottom, where posts provide minimal resistance to lateral ice pressure.
We pull docks across Houghton Lake's entire shoreline each fall. The dense residential development on Houghton Lake means we have many properties to service in a compressed window — another reason early scheduling matters. Call in September for a late September or October date.
On hard-bottom lakes like Higgins Lake, a dock left in might sustain ice damage but often stays in roughly the same position. On Houghton Lake's muck bottom, moving ice sheets can push dock sections dozens of feet from their original position. We've been called to spring assessments where sections have floated 50+ feet from where they were installed. The cost of removal is always less than the cost of recovering and repairing an ice-damaged dock.
"Our neighbors left their dock in one fall and it ended up 40 feet down the shore by spring. After seeing that, we've never missed our fall removal. Great Lakes Dock Works comes every October and we don't think about it."
"Fast, professional, no drama. They showed up at the time they gave us, pulled the whole dock including the lift in about 90 minutes, stacked everything neatly, and were done. That's what you want from a dock service."
Houghton Lake is in central Michigan and freezes reliably each winter. We recommend dock removal by late October. The lake's large size means fall storms generate real wave energy, and ice formation can lock sections in place if removal is delayed past mid-November. Many of our Houghton Lake customers schedule in September for October removal dates.
Actually, the muck bottom makes post pulling easier than hard-bottom lakes like Higgins Lake or Torch Lake — posts slide out of soft muck more readily. The challenge is that pulled posts often come up coated in muck, which we clean and stack properly. We come prepared with the equipment needed for efficient muck-bottom removal.
Ideally all removable dock sections come out for winter. If sections must stay in due to circumstances, try to remove as much of the walkway decking as possible, and disconnect any boat lifts. Sections left in on Houghton Lake's muck bottom are highly susceptible to ice movement and often come out of position significantly by spring.
