Lake Macatawa stays active longer than northern Michigan lakes, but docks still need to come out before winter ice and Lake Michigan storms. We pull docks on Lake Macatawa and Ottawa County waters — professionally and on schedule every fall.
Holland's West Michigan location gives it a milder fall climate than northern Michigan, and Lake Macatawa typically stays ice-free through November. This means the dock removal season in Holland runs later than in Traverse City or Petoskey — most Lake Macatawa property owners pull their docks in late October or early November rather than early October.
That said, Lake Michigan nor'easters can push significant water through the Holland Channel onto Lake Macatawa even in November, and the lake freezes hard enough to damage docks left in through December. The general guidance: out by early November, preferably before Thanksgiving.
If you have properties on both Holland-area lakes and northern Michigan lakes, be aware they need different timing. Northern Michigan properties (Grand Traverse Bay, Little Traverse Bay, Lake Charlevoix) should pull docks in late September or early October. Holland-area properties can typically wait until late October or early November. We service both regions and can coordinate your fall removal schedule accordingly.
"We switched to Great Lakes Dock Works this year after our previous crew left everything scattered across the yard. These guys stack everything neatly and leave the property looking clean. And they showed up when they said they would — something you can't take for granted."
"Really straightforward service. They pulled the dock, bundled the posts, stacked everything in the side yard. Done in under two hours. Booked them for spring reinstall at the same time. Simple and professional."
Lake Macatawa stays relatively active into November compared to northern Michigan lakes — the Holland area's milder West Michigan climate means ice comes later. Most Lake Macatawa property owners remove docks in late October or early November. However, docks left in past mid-November risk ice damage and should be removed before the first hard freeze.
Standard residential dock removal on Lake Macatawa doesn't require permits. However, properties near the Holland Channel or Lake Michigan connection may have Army Corps considerations if the work involves waterway-adjacent structures. For typical seasonal removal of a residential dock, no permits are required.
