Lake Charlevoix is one of Michigan's largest inland lakes and generates real fall wave energy. We pull docks on Lake Charlevoix, Round Lake, Pine River Channel properties, and surrounding Charlevoix County waters — professionally, on schedule, before the weather turns.
Lake Charlevoix's 17,260 acres and 122-foot maximum depth mean it behaves more like a Great Lake than an inland lake in fall weather. A sustained northwest wind builds waves across the lake's full length, and open-water properties on the main lake can see waves that rival those on Grand Traverse Bay. Timing dock removal correctly on Lake Charlevoix is as important as it is on the bays.
We service Lake Charlevoix's north arm, south arm, and the Round Lake inner harbor area each fall. Properties vary widely in exposure — the north arm is more sheltered than the open main lake, but every dock on the system should be out by mid-October. We'll give you a recommendation based on your specific location when you call.
Lake Charlevoix has distinct sections with different exposure profiles. The open main lake between the north and south arm narrows is most exposed and should be prioritized for early removal. The north arm (toward Boyne City) and south arm (toward East Jordan) offer more shelter from open-water waves, but are still subject to ice and should be cleared before freeze-up. Round Lake, the inner harbor, is the most protected but still freezes hard in winter.
"We had a dock on the main lake that took wave damage two falls in a row before we started using Great Lakes Dock Works. They pull in early October and we haven't had a problem since. Peace of mind is worth every penny."
"Our property is near the Pine River Channel and we always had questions about what we could and couldn't do there. Great Lakes Dock Works knew the answers and made the whole fall removal easy and straightforward. Reliable crew, would recommend to anyone on the lake."
Lake Charlevoix's large size — nearly 18,000 acres — means it generates real fall wave energy, and northern Michigan weather can arrive abruptly. We recommend dock removal by mid-October at the latest. Properties on the open main lake should pull earlier than sheltered cove or channel properties. Round Lake and Pine River Channel properties often stay in slightly longer due to their protected positions.
Pine River Channel connects Lake Charlevoix to Lake Michigan and is an Army Corps of Engineers-maintained waterway. Properties adjacent to or near the channel should be aware that any removal or installation work in the channel itself requires authorization, though private dock removal on adjacent private property is straightforward. We're familiar with the channel area and can clarify what applies to your specific location.
We handle seasonal removal for pipe docks, aluminum sectional docks, and other demountable systems. For permanent or semi-permanent structures, we can provide assessment and advise on appropriate removal approaches. For very large or complex permanent structures, specialized marine contractors may be more appropriate, and we'll tell you honestly if that's your situation.
Yes. Round Lake is the inner harbor of Charlevoix and we service dock removal for private residential properties around Round Lake. The protected location means less wave exposure than the main lake, but docks should still come out before ice — typically mid-to-late October at the latest.
Reserve your fall removal date before our October calendar is full.
