New Dock Installation on Little Traverse Bay & Area Lakes

Petoskey sits on one of Northern Michigan's most scenic stretches of shoreline, but Little Traverse Bay's rocky bottom creates real challenges for dock installation. Standard pipe docks driven into sand work well on Michigan's inland sandy-bottomed lakes — but on the bay, where limestone and cobble dominate the nearshore bottom, you need different solutions. Getting that right from the start determines whether your dock lasts decades or becomes an expensive problem.

We've been installing docks throughout the Petoskey area for over 20 years — on the bay, on Walloon Lake, Bear Lake, Crooked Lake, and the full Inland Waterway chain. Emmet County and the surrounding townships each have their own interpretations of what permits a new dock requires, and we know the process on every water body we work on.

Dock Systems We Install Near Petoskey

  • Floating dock systems — the preferred solution for rocky Little Traverse Bay shorelines
  • Anchored pipe docks — for sandy-bottomed inland lakes like Bear Lake and parts of Walloon Lake
  • Roll-in / wheel docks — popular with second-home owners who want straightforward seasonal removal
  • Aluminum frame docks — rust-proof and lightweight, ideal for Northern Michigan properties
  • Composite and cedar decking — low-maintenance options for property owners who prefer to spend summers on the water
  • Custom configurations — L-shapes and T-shapes sized for your lot, water depth, and boat

Rocky Shorelines and Inland Lake Variety

Little Traverse Bay's shoreline is predominantly limestone and cobble — a beautiful environment that makes traditional pipe dock installation difficult or impossible in many spots. Floating dock systems anchored with block or spud poles solve this cleanly and have become the standard for many bay properties. On Walloon Lake and Bear Lake, bottom conditions are more varied — sandy in some areas, rocky or mucky in others — and the right system depends on your specific lot.

Crooked Lake and the Inland Waterway chain have their own dynamics. These connected lakes see significant through-traffic from boaters traveling to and from Lake Huron, which affects dock exposure and sizing. We account for boat wake, water level fluctuation, and Emmet County regulations when designing any Inland Waterway installation.

Rocky Bottom Experience

Little Traverse Bay's limestone and cobble shorelines require different installation methods than Michigan's sandy inland lakes. We know which systems work on bay rock — and which will fail. We won't recommend something that isn't right for your site.

Emmet County Permit Knowledge

We've worked through EGLE and Emmet County permit requirements on every major water body in the area. We know what each water body requires — so your installation stays on schedule and compliant.

Second-Home Focused

Many Petoskey-area waterfront owners are second-home families who want a dock that's easy to operate, durable, and doesn't require constant attention. We build and specify with that in mind.

What Petoskey Area Customers Say

"We have a bay property in Harbor Springs with a notorious rocky bottom. Two previous dock installs over the years both failed. Great Lakes Dock Works came out, assessed the site, and installed a floating system properly anchored to bedrock. It's been solid for two seasons — the right solution finally."

"We called in early March about a new dock on our Walloon Lake cottage property — I was worried it was too late to book for spring. They got us on the schedule and had the dock in by late April. Great crew, clean work, and they handled the permit process completely."

Dock Installation — Petoskey Area FAQ

What dock type works best for Little Traverse Bay's rocky bottom?

Rocky limestone and cobble shorelines on Little Traverse Bay are not compatible with standard pipe dock installation — the posts won't hold. Floating dock systems anchored with spud poles or concrete blocks are the standard solution for bay properties. On inland sandy-bottom lakes like Bear Lake, standard pipe docks work well.

Do I need a permit for a dock on Walloon Lake?

Permanent dock structures on Walloon Lake generally require EGLE approval and may need Emmet County and local township sign-off. Seasonal (removable) docks typically don't require a permit in most circumstances, but local ordinances vary. We confirm exactly what your project requires before we start.

How far in advance should I call to book spring installation near Petoskey?

By early April our spring calendar is typically full. For Memorial Day installation, call in February or early March. Second-home owners returning for the season all tend to want dock work done at the same time — early booking is the only way to secure your preferred window.

Do you work on the Inland Waterway chain — Crooked Lake, Burt Lake, Mullett Lake?

Yes, we work throughout the Inland Waterway. Each lake has different bottom conditions — Crooked Lake and Burt Lake are deeper with more varied bottoms, Mullett Lake is shallower in many areas. Boat traffic on the waterway also creates wake that affects dock sizing. We assess every site individually.
