Dock & Lift Services for Metro Detroit's Most Active Waterway
Lake St. Clair is one of Michigan's most unique waterfront environments — a 430-square-mile lake shared between the United States and Canada, flanked by Metro Detroit's most active boating communities. St. Clair Shores, Harrison Township, Grosse Pointe, New Baltimore, Algonac, and the surrounding communities along the Michigan shoreline represent some of the densest concentrations of private waterfront property in the state. Great Lakes Dock Works serves the full Michigan side of Lake St. Clair.
Lake St. Clair is different in character from Northern Michigan's resort lakes. This is an active working waterway with heavy recreational and commercial vessel traffic, and a complex regulatory environment. Dock and lift work here requires more robust construction to handle wake exposure and familiarity with municipal rules that vary significantly between communities. We've worked across these jurisdictions and know what questions to ask before any project starts.
Services We Offer on Lake St. Clair
Navigating Lake St. Clair's Regulatory Environment
Lake St. Clair is a federally designated navigable waterway, which means Army Corps of Engineers rules may apply to certain dock structures — particularly permanent or large-footprint installations. In addition to federal review, EGLE may require permits for structures extending into the lake. On top of state review, each municipality has its own setback rules and permitting processes. St. Clair Shores has different requirements than Harrison Township, which differs from Grosse Pointe. We are experienced navigating these layers and can help you understand what your specific project requires before work begins.
The wake environment on Lake St. Clair also demands construction quality above what's typical on a calm inland lake. Repeated vessel wake causes dock hardware to loosen over time — bolts back out, brackets shift, and dock sections can rack or separate if not properly secured. We use heavier hardware grades on Lake St. Clair installations and include a hardware check in every service call. If you haven't had a professional inspection on a dock that's been in place for several years, now is a good time.
