Grand Traverse Bay's wave exposure demands a lift that's properly sized and anchored for real bay conditions. We install vertical, cantilever, and hydraulic lifts on West Bay, East Bay, Old Mission Peninsula, and Grand Traverse County inland lakes.
Grand Traverse Bay is one of Michigan's premier waterfront locations, and waterfront property owners in the Traverse City area take their dock and lift setup seriously. The bay's unique geography — two arms separated by Old Mission Peninsula — creates different wave exposure profiles that directly affect what lift type and capacity is appropriate for a given location.
We install boat lifts throughout Grand Traverse County, including West Bay, East Bay, Bowers Harbor, Old Mission Peninsula shorelines, and inland lakes including Torch Lake, Elk Lake, Spider Lake, Long Lake, and others. Each location gets a specific assessment before we make any recommendation.
West Bay faces northwest — the dominant storm direction in northern Michigan — and generates meaningful wave energy in fall and spring storms. Open-water West Bay properties should be spec'd for hydraulic or heavy-duty vertical lifts with wave-rated hardware. East Bay is more sheltered due to its orientation and the shelter provided by Old Mission Peninsula to the west; standard vertical 4-post lifts perform well on most East Bay properties.
Bowers Harbor and other sheltered coves on either arm have the most flexibility in lift selection due to their natural protection from open-water wave energy.
"We have a West Bay property and needed a lift that wouldn't be moved around by fall storms. Great Lakes Dock Works recommended a hydraulic lift and it's been solid through two very rough falls. Excellent recommendation and clean installation."
"Our Old Mission Peninsula property has a quick depth drop-off that made standard lift placement tricky. They assessed the site, recommended a cantilever configuration, and it works perfectly with our existing dock. Very knowledgeable crew."
Grand Traverse Bay is a large bay with real wave exposure — especially on West Bay, which faces northwest into the dominant storm track. For West Bay open-water properties, we recommend hydraulic lifts or heavy-duty vertical lifts with robust wave-rated hardware. East Bay is more sheltered and allows more flexibility in lift selection. For inland lake properties in Grand Traverse County, standard vertical lifts work well in most locations.
Grand Traverse Bay is subject to EGLE Part 301 (Inland Lake and Stream Act) for new structures, and may have additional local municipality requirements depending on your specific location. Old Mission Peninsula properties may have additional township-level review. We recommend confirming permit requirements with Grand Traverse County and EGLE before beginning installation.
West Bay has a larger open water fetch to the northwest and sees more wave action than East Bay. Properties on the open West Bay shoreline need higher-capacity, wave-rated lift systems. East Bay's more enclosed shape and southeast orientation makes it more sheltered, and standard vertical lifts perform well there in most applications. We'll ask about your specific location before making any recommendation.
Spring installation — ideally in May after ice-out is confirmed and the water is workable — is the standard approach. Our Traverse City spring calendar fills by mid-April, so we recommend calling in February or March to reserve your installation date. We can sometimes accommodate late spring requests if scheduling allows.
